  1. One

[Daz ouge, da inne ich got sihe]
The eye through which I see God

[daz ist daz selbe ouge, da inne mich got sihet]
    is the same eye through which God sees me;

[min ouge und gotes ouge daz ist
    ein ouge]
my eye and God’s eye are one eye,

[Daz ouge, da inne ich got sihe]
The eye through which I see God

[daz ist daz selbe ouge, da inne mich got sihet]
    is the same eye through which God sees me;

[min ouge und gotes ouge daz ist
    ein ouge]
my eye and God’s eye are one eye,

    Annihilated, I then emerged

    Living on but without I

    And who am I, O I, but I?

    Annihilated, I then emerged

    Living on but without I

    And who am I, O I, but I?

I drank from the eternal cup of love

that is neither of this world below nor of heaven.

Thus I became peerless in my time

Carrying my banner among one and all.

Mine is a wondrous path, an unsurpassed path.

How great is its radiance and my delight therein.

If you do not give me your favor freely, I am wretched.

If you do not give me your favor freely, I am wretched.

People of Najd, far be it from you

To cut the ties of hope that bind us.

O you, who are worthy of beauty

If you do not give me your favor freely, I am wretched.

Mine is a wondrous path, an unsurpassed path.

How great is its radiance and my delight therein.

Thus I became peerless in my time

Carrying my banner among one and all.

    [daz ist ein ouge]
    It is one eye

    [und ein gesiht]
    one seeing

    [und ein bekennen]
    one knowing,

    [und ein minnen]
    one love.

    [daz ist ein ouge]
    It is one eye

    [und ein gesiht]
    one seeing

    [daz ist ein ouge]
    It is one eye

    [und ein gesiht]
    one seeing

    [und ein bekennen]
    one knowing

    [und ein minnen]
    one love.

    [daz ist ein ouge]
    It is one eye

    [und ein gesiht]
    one seeing

    [und ein bekennen]
    one knowing

    [und ein minnen]
    one love.

    More information:

Imadeddin Nasimi (1369-1417), an Azerbaijani poet, philosopher and sage, was the author of the first Divans (collections of poetry) in the Azerbaijani language. Considered as one of the greatest mystical Turkic poets of his time, he also composed poems in Persian and Arabic. Although few details are known about his life, his passionate poetry shows his deep knowledge of Islamic poetic traditions as well as a genius for composition, and it shows a depth of knowledge of Islamic, particularly Sufi, intellectual teachings that indicates that he must have had training in these fields. His gift as a poet was instrumental in conveying Hurufi Sufi philosophy to the Turkish-speaking population of Anatolia, a philosophical perspective that is still echoed in the certain Sufi orders today.

The poem in the composition, ‘Nasimi’, has elements of a tradition of ecstatic sayings that emerge from a deep inner state of knowing, an overpowering spiritual state that is often fleeting. Ecstatic sayings such as those of Mansur al-Hallaj, Bayazid Bastami, Nasimi, and others, need to be interpreted in the context of the mystical vocabulary of their times. And it is necessary to understand the religious forces, the social and political life, and the whole culture of the Islamic world within which these figures lived and died. Without a profound understanding of this context certain of their words, which on the surface can resemble infidelity, are easily misconstrued.

In this poem, Nasimi returns repeatedly to the contrast between the ‘two worlds’, the physical and spiritual. By naming opposites—‘I am the old, I am the young’— he points beyond them to unity, to tawhid, to the divine unity that is one of his principle themes. For Nasimi, the signs of God (ayat Allah) are found throughout creation, but they are not limited by this realm alone.

  4. The Centre

Why am I in this place torn asunder by blight?
Shorn by the blades of inequity, drowned by darkness,
Immersed in the turbid waters of negligence and forgetfulness?
Question not why, but understand this simple truth:
Here is the Centre that is the Centre of all wheres,
Now is the moment at the heart of all times.
Ask not why here and now

But be in the here and now
Here is the Centre that is the Centre of all wheres,
Now is the moment at the heart of all times
Ask not why here and now

But be in the here and now
To find the key to all existence

  5. Pearl

I spent a thousand sleepless nights
In wait of dreams I could not find
I walked a thousand empty roads
In search of signs to bring me home
With every breath I spoke your name
And heard it rolling in the waves
Beneath a veil of ocean blue
I broke illusion from the truth

You said, walk to me and I’ll find you
Call me and I’ll show you
Hiding like a pearl for you
    To heal and guide you
    From deep inside you
Hiding like a pearl for you

And from the pulse beneath my skin
You called me to a source within
Where every layer revealed one more
    A secret brighter than before
And at the heart there lay just one
The root of all that I’d become
I watched the surface start to break
Free of form, free of shape.

You said, walk to me and I’ll run to you
Call me and I’ll show you
Hiding like a pearl for you
    To heal and guide you,
    From deep inside you
Hiding like a pearl for you.

  6. Cadence

On that moment before all moments,
On that morn before the world was born,
When we did Thy Lordship witness,
Seeing Thy Countenance, hearing Thy Command,
Uttering the yea that echoes forever within,
Did we the cadence of Divine Music hear.

In this lowly world I hear that Music near and far,
In the plucking of the oud and the tar,
In the drone of the sitar and the gong of the gamelan,
In the haunting melodies of those monks
Singing in unison of Thy Glory,
In the rhythmic drumbeats issuing from verdant forests,
And the shepherd’s ney breathing upon the hills,
In all those voices chanting of the love for Thee,
In all music that celebrates Thy Beauty inviolable,
I do hear that cadence of Divine Music,
And so in the chanting of the birds and the singing of the whales,
In the murmur of the wind through those majestic trees,
And even in the silent invocation of the mountains and the stars,
For is not the substance of all Thy creation,
But invocation of Thy Blessed Names
chanted in the cadence of Divine Music?

But most of all it is in solitude with Thee,
When I and Thou are alone in intimacy,
That I hear so clearly the cadence of that Music Divine
Which I heard on that pre-eternal dawn,
And which ceases not to resonate within,
Bearing witness to the reality of Thy Presence,
Echoing the cadence of that Divine Music,
Echoes from the myriads of created beings
That are but nothingness reflecting Thy Theophanies.

Let me be alone in Thy intimacy,
So as to hear again in the clearest of sounds,
The cadence of that Music Divine
Which I heard at the moment of encounter with Thy Face,
In that pre-eternal moment of creation,
The moment that is now and ever shall be the eternal now.

  7. Al Faqir

I am in need of You,

but You have no need of me

    I am weak

but You are abundant in strength

    All things vanish and disintegrate,

but You alone are the Living

You gave me life and an aspiring spirit,

    full of hope and fear

    For you are our Protector,

    O Protector, O Protector!

  8. Let Us Not Forget

    Let us not forget who we are, whence we came, where we shall go;
Let us not forget that pre-eternal day when we bore witness,
Bore witness to His Lordship with a resounding yea,
Which does still echo under the vaults of the celestial realm.

Let us not forget the intimacy of the Beloved’s embrace,
The warmth of Her bosom when we in union were.
We have now fallen and forgotten who we are,
Wandering on earth with no compass in hand.

But we can remember, so let us not forget.
Let us not forget that although cast in this lowly world,
Although blinded by veils of neglect and heedlessness,
Although forgetfulness our second nature has become,
We are placed here on earth to remember and can remember.

Let us not forget then to remember our Origin and End,
To remember who we really are as we make this journey of earthly life.

  9. Circle

I see you in the wings that chase the night
    Circling the warmth of candlelight
I hear you in the wind as the two poles spin
Whispering the truth your heart holds in
I feel you in the chill as the seasons turn
Laying down a seed, with its lessons learned.

The circle spins a perfect line
Free from borders, free from time
I close my eyes and clear my mind
The circle joins your love with mine

I feel you in the sand of the desert earth
You know my hunger, know my thirst
I hear you in the cry of distant rain
Coming back to answer the call again
I meet you in the centre of the sacred dance
Reminding me your truth is in my heart

The circle spins a perfect line
Free from borders, free from time
I close my eyes and clear my mind
The circle joins your love with mine

  10. Prism

    All of your waves
    Have come from one
    The seed has spread
    The dawn of light
    Has split from white
    To blues and reds

    Behind it all
    There must be more

    Seven colours of day
Show the light of your way
Have I found what is lying behind
    The fire in your eyes?
Do you see what I see?

    And from one breath
    All sound was formed
    Your words could sing
    The prism shares
    Your secret layers
    Unraveling

    Behind it all
    There must be more

    Seven colours of day
Show the light of your way
Have I found what is lying behind
    The fire in your eyes?
Do you see what I see?

Every heart, Every hand, Every head
    Rise up
Every thought, Every tear, Every smile
    Rise up
Every fear, Every doubt, Every trouble
    Rise up
Every hope, Every wish, Every prayer
    Rise Up
Every faith, Every creed, Every colour
    Rise Up
    Every mind, Every soul, Everyone
    (Rise Up)

Do you see what I see?

    Nūr ʿAlā Nūr
    Nūr ʿAlā Nūr

  12. Lament

My father be the ransom of him for whose sake I melted with anguish!
My father be the ransom of him for whose sake I died of fear!
The blush of shame on his cheek is the whiteness of dawn conversing with the Redness of eve
They left me at al-Uthayl and an-Naqá

Who will compose my distracted thoughts?
    Who will relieve my pain?
    Guide me to him!
    Who will ease my sorrow?
Who will help a passionate lover?

Whenever I keep secret the torments of desire
My tears betray the flame within and the sleeplessness
They left me at al-Uthayl and an-Naqá

And whenever I say, ‘Give me one look!
The answer is, ‘Thou art not hindered but for pity’s sake.’
My father, my father, my father

  13. Come See

    I am walking, burning, burning,
Love has stained my heart with yearning,
    Neither crazy nor discerning –
Come, see, what love has done to me.

Gel gör beni beni aşk neyledi
    Derde giriftar eyledi

Come, see, what love has done to me.

One day like the winds I’m blowing,
One day like the roads I’m going,
One day like the floods I’m flowing.
Come, see, what love has done to me.

Take my hand and keep me staying –
Take me else, to You conveying,
No more tears, for laughs I’m praying.
Come, see, what love has done to me.

    Walking round with Majnun’s madness,
Seeing Her in dreams my gladness,
    Waking up again in sadness.
Come, see, what love has done to me.

I am Yunus, poor and stricken,
From my exile my steps quicken,
Head to toe I hurt and sicken.
Come, see, what love has done to me.

    Ben yürürüm yane yane
    I am walking, burning, burning,

    Aşk boyadı beni kane
Love has stained my heart with yearning,

    Ne akilem ne divane
    Neither crazy nor discerning –

    Gel gör beni aşk neyledi
    Derde giriftar eyledi
Come, see, what love has done to me.
Come, see, what love has done to me.

  14. Meditation (Live)

    [Arabic:]
Peace and salutations upon you O Messenger of Allah
Peace and salutations upon you O Beloved of Allah
    Peace and salutations upon you
    Upon you O my Master
Upon you O Master of the first (generations) and the last (generations).

  15. Khorasan

    Khorasan
    I have come
    Here alone

    In my dream
    Earth and stone
    Turned to gold

    Was that you
    Long ago
    Khorasan?

Can you guide me to the treasures I have lost?
Can you show me every secret I forgot?
When I came you asked me where I had come from
You said my homeland was my kingdom all along

    Khorasan
    I must go
    Send me home

    Breathe in me

    I have healed
    I have grown

    Give me peace
    In my soul
    Khorasan

Can you guide me to the treasures I have lost?
Can you show me every secret I forgot?
When I came you asked me where I had come from
You said my homeland was my kingdom and my secret all along

    Khorasan,
    Send me home
    Khorasan.

  16. Healing (Live)

    It’s so hard to explain
    What I’m feeling
    But I guess it’s ok
    Cause I’ll keep believing
    There’s something deep inside
    Something that’s calling
    It’s calling you and I
It’s taking us up high to

    Healing, a simple act of
    kindness bring such meaning
A smile can change a life, let’s start believing
    And feeling, let’s start healing

Heal and you will be healed
    Break every border
    Give and you will receive
    It’s nature’s order
    There is a hidden force
    Pulling us closer
    It’s pulling you and I
It’s pulling us up high to

    [Arabic:]
Hearts in the hand of another heart
And in God’s hand are all hearts
An eye takes care of another eye
And God’s eye takes care of all

A kind word is an act of charity
A smile to your brother is an act of charity
All goodness is a form of charity
O Lord, cure the illness and heal in a way that leaves behind no ailments

    Let’s start healing

  17. The Key

    In Andalucian morning light
In seas of azure, in dawning skies
I watch you bloom, the birth of spring
You are the song that all lovers sing
You are the key holding me in

    I am a prisoner, I can’t escape
The key is inside the forms you take
You are the web I cannot spin
You are the pulse beneath my skin
You are the key holding me in

Your love is a door I cannot find
The only way out is from deep inside
I’m humbled by the light you take
When you cover every colour of the day
I’m brightened by the night you bring
You are the divine eternal ring
You are the end where everything begins
You are the key holding me in

I’m humbled by the light you take
When you cover every colour of the day
Illuminated in the night you bring
You are the divine eternal ring
You are the end where everything begins
You are the key holding me in
The only key holding me in

Description

Sami Yusuf’s ‘The Sapiential Album’ dives deep into the world waiting just beyond the superficiality of daily life. Lyrics in this collection come from contemporary songwriters and poets as well as from mystics of centuries past whose words burn even brighter today. Each song tells a story of a step taken on the path to the wisdom, love and compassion that’s the destiny of us all.

‘The Sapiential Album’ includes new releases ‘ONE’ and ‘The 99 Names’ as well as ‘Light Upon Light’ with A.R. Rahman. The artist is launching a new, previously unreleased, single in this album: ‘Come See / Ben Yürürüm Yane Yane’ recorded live at the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music.
