Organized by the Greater Ankara Municipality, Saturday’s concert also served as a celebration of Lailat-al Miraj (Miraç Kandili in Turkish), a Muslim festival marking Prophet Muhammad’s Isra and Miraj, Isra being the name for his night journey from Mecca to Jerusalem and Miraj the term for his ascension to Heaven. Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek and his wife, Nevin, were among the audience at the concert who sang along to Yusuf’s songs throughout, the Anatolia news agency said.
The internationally renowned Yusuf, dubbed “Islam’s biggest rock star” by Time magazine, recently composed a song called “Forgotten Promises” in support of millions of people affected by the worst drought in more than 60 years in the Horn of Africa. He is donating all proceeds from the sales of his song and its video to a campaign called Live Feed Africa, organized by the UN’s World Food Programme (WFP).
